She has become the face of Occupy Wall Street, a 25-year-old hazel-eyed Atlantan with a fierce sense of outrage and a good eye for style.

Cecily McMillan was arrested during a protest in a New York park in 2012 and charged with elbowing a cop in the eye as he arrested her. She said he was grabbing her breast and the reaction was pure instinct.

The tawdry elements of the case – and the fact that she got convicted and was sentenced to more time than almost all the Wall Street suits who helped caused the financial meltdown – has made her a New York cause celebre.

McMillan hails from an Atlanta family who likes a good protest. She returned to town recently after her release from the infamous Rikers Island, where she picked up another cause, prisoner rights. She sat down, over an iced coffee, to tell her story, exclusively on MyAjc.com.
