The first phase of Matt Community Park at Settingdown Creek, a more-than $10 million facility funded by a Forsyth County parks bond and impact fees, opened recently on about 180 acres at 6555 Wallace Tatum Road.

The northwest Forsyth park has four synthetic-turf rectangular fields, a playground, concession and restroom buildings and a maintenance facility, county officials said. About a mile of natural-surface walking trails is expected to be completed next spring.

A 2008 Parks, Recreation and Green Space bond issue made possible the acquisition of 185 acres that year; the land previously had been approved for 399 homes. The county set aside three acres for a new Fire Station No. 3, which opened in July 2013.

Future park phases may have tennis courts, an outdoor amphitheater, picnic pavilions, and additional fields and trails. A master plan for the property also envisions a library and senior citizens center.
