Forsyth County Commissioners late last week approved a plan to expand the Eagle Point Landfill in north Forsyth County, over the objections of neighbors and environmental groups who feared potential pollution and said the deal amounted to a “blank check” for owner Advanced Disposal.

Under the deal, the county will get 10 cents per cubic yard of additional space for the expansion starting 90 days after final permitting is granted by the state’s Environmental Protection Division, leading to $2-2.5 million in revenue for the county. The deal also requires the landfill to pay the county an increased fee of $1.50 for each ton of waste, which is set to increase to $2.00 in 2028.

The agreement also means the county will have access to streamed live footage of the truck-weighing landfill scales and can do audits of Advanced Disposal’s books. And officials said the expansion could not go beyond the footprint of a 1993 agreement.

Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills said while some criticized the memorandum of understanding clearing the way for the expansion, the final deal was based on”months and months” of work and negotiating and extensive input from county residents.
