Hair salons, wedding shops, art studios and other small businesses in Fayetteville may now serve small amounts of alcohol using a new “limited pour” license approved by the City Council on Feb. 1.

The ordinance applies to two free servings of either five ounces of wine or 16 ounces of a malt beverage within a 24-hour period. The limited pour provision, which has a $125 annual fee, is designed “to allow boutique service businesses the ability to offer a complimentary beverage while their customers are shopping, receiving services, or attending a promotional event.”

Some local businesses were already serving free alcohol, but the legality of the practice was unclear.
