Fayette County’s board of commissioners has agreed to allocate preliminary funds for a new health department facility and a new animal shelter.

The board voted unanimously Thursday night to designate $1 million toward the design and construction of a second animal shelter building on Hwy. 74 South at the southern end of Peachtree City to improve operations and increase the capacity for dogs; the existing building would be renovated for improved cat space. The board also designated $1 million for a new public health building that would expand services and improve clinic space and efficiency, as well as house the Women, Infants and Children offices.

The motion to approve that funding passed 4-1, with Eric Maxwell in opposition based on a procedural dispute. More detailed plans and budgets for both projects will be presented after initial design bids are received.
