Fayette County Public Schools wants to fill 75 to 100 percent of its open teaching positions by June 1.

Contracts went out to current teachers this week, and are due back March 18. After that, the county hopes to attract the most qualified candidates quickly.

Last year Fayette had 165 teacher vacancies after March 13, 70 percent of which were filled by June 1.

Erin Roberson, assistant director of human resources, told the Board of Education Monday that “the most talented applicants get hired early,” so the county is working to step up its hiring rate, especially in such critical areas as special education.
