Fayette County may be expanding its pre-kindergarten program.
The Board of Education voted 4-0-1 (with Diane Basham absent) on Dec. 10 to pursue an opportunity to add another pre-k class to either Inman or Sara Harp Minter elementary school. Kim Herron, director of elementary school improvement/professional learning, told the board that both schools have waiting lists of 27-31 children but have maximum pre-k enrollments of 22. The principals of both schools are “extremely interested” in adding another class and both have classroom space.
The county will now move forward with discussions with Bright from the Start, the state’s pre-k agency, to provide more information pending final review of the addition. If approved, the new pre-k class would be added for the spring semester.
