The Fayette County Board of Education voted 5-0 to adopt a $203.7 million budget for the upcoming school year. The increase over this year’s $193 million budget was attributed mostly to higher personnel costs, including step increases, cost-of-living raises, retirement benefits and healthcare premiums that total about $9 million.

Board members Brian Anderson and Diane Basham said that increasing class sizes, closing schools or firing teachers would not be acceptable to the community. Board Chair Barry Marchman said he would like to explore the possibility of larger buildings or class sizes next year, but for now, “I’m at a loss of how to cut the budget any further.”
