Duluth is reopening its tennis courts after a closure of more than a month. But other restrictions on the city’s parks and recreation facilities will remain in place indefinitely.

The city closed parks and other public spaces in March as part of its effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The tennis courts at W.P. Jones Park and Bunten Road Park will reopen May 8. The restrooms at those facilities will also open. Reservations for the courts will not be taken; the courts will be used for open play only.

The courts have been closed since late March, when the city declared a state of emergency due to coronavirus.

Other measures taken to keep people out of the city’s parks and other recreation areas are not being lifted, however. All active adult programs at the W.P. Lodge, evening and weekend programs and sports leagues have been cancelled. Restrooms on the Duluth Town Green are still closed, and city park hours are restricted from sunrise to sunset.

Playgrounds, sports fields and pavilions are closed until further notice at Taylor Park, Church Street Park, W.P. Jones Park, Rogers Bridge Park, Scott Hudgens Park and Bunten Road Park. Trails are open for use at Bunten Road Park from sunrise to sunset, but the city urges those who use the trails to practice social distancing.

The reopening of the tennis courts comes amid gradual moves to return some operations to normal across Georgia. Malls have reopened to shoppers and some restaurants are allowing in-person dining. Gwinnett County moved to reopen its dog parks to the public earlier this week.
