Duluth has been investigating the possibility of changing the name of Chattahoochee Drive to West Main Street from Rogers Bridge Road to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The purpose of the change is to provide more continuity and connectivity from downtown to the completed Sugarloaf Market Place Development.
Two issues have emerged. Chattahoochee Drive is a city owned road that is county maintained. With city owned roads, the local jurisdiction has the authority by resolution to enact the name change without approval from the county. There is currently no set name change process for city owned roads. A previous street name change occurred May 13, 2002 when the city changed Hardy Industrial Boulevard to Hardy Street. This was enacted by resolution.
County procedure to change a street name includes notifying affected property owners and obtaining signatures of support at least 51 percent of the property owners for the name changed. Duluth currently has 75 percent support from properties along Chattahoochee Drive for the name change.
The city council will vote on the name change at the next scheduled council meeting Feb. 13 at City Hall, 3167 Main St.
