A DeKalb police officer who was seriously injured in an accident while responding to a multi-car accident on I-20 a week ago has been transferred to the Shepherd Center for therapy, according to his family.

Officer Daniel LaCoste, a 19-year veteran of the DeKalb Police Department, was struck by a passing motorist on I-20 east just west of Evans Mill Road on July 17. He had been in intensive care at Grady Memorial Hospital since the accident.

LaCoste suffered a broken collarbone and leg and a fractured skull, his sister, Renee Pitzer, told Channel 2 Action News.

LaCoste was out of his car and checking on the medical condition of motorists in an earlier multi-car accident when he was struck, said Sgt. Leon Mitchum with DeKalb police.

Kimyata White, the driver who struck the officer, was charged with improper lane change and driving too fast for conditions.

Pitzer told Channel 2 Action News her brother checked out of Grady on Friday and is now at the Shepherd Center, where he'll undergo therapy for about three weeks for his spinal and brain injuries. The sister said LaCoste was in good spirits and healing well.
