The man behind DeKalb County’s Sept. 11 memorial sculpture has been named the county’s Firefighter of the Year.

Doug Harms led the effort of firefighters who drove to New York City to secure a beam from the World Trade Center for the memorial dedicated this fall in front of the county’s Public Safety Headquarters in Tucker.

Harms has worked for DeKalb since August 2008 and is based at the Station 7 on Derril Drive.
