The NAACP DeKalb County Branch invites residents to participate in its annual Jubilee Celebration. This event will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1 at Rainbow Park Baptist Church, 2941 Columbia Drive, Decatur, according to a press release.

The Rev. Dr. Steven N. Dial Sr. is the senior pastor.

The 2020 theme is “The Promise of America is not the Promise to us.” The speaker will be Cameron McWhirter, historian, author and reporter for the Wall Street Journal. He is the author of “Red Summer: The Summer of 1919” and the “Awakening of Black America.” He will speak on the summer of 1919, the year anti-black race riots broke out in more than 33 cities across the country.

“We celebrate the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st because it is our Independence Day, ”said DeKalb County Branch NAACP President Teresa Hardy.

NAACP DeKalb County Branch Jubilee Chair, Attorney D.E. Smith, further explains, “Too many of us either don’t know it or worse, don’t care. We’d rather celebrate the 4th of July which freed those of European descent and left us in slavery.”
