Atlanta City Council member Kwanza Hall wants to set up a dedicated funding source for fixing the city's broken sidewalks. Hall introduced legislation this week intended to augment the city’s Sidewalk Trust Fund. Under the legislation, revenue collected from payments made to the city for private sidewalk repairs will go directly into the city's dedicated account for sidewalk construction and replacement, rather than to the general fund.
"Over time, monies accumulated in the fund will allow us to be more proactive when it comes to sidewalk repairs and improvements," Hall said.
Atlanta has an estimated $152 million backlog of broken and uneven sidewalks, said Sally Flocks, president of PEDS, a nonprofit pedestrian advocacy group.
