A Decatur pizza restaurant was temporarily shut down Tuesday after failing its second routine health inspection this year.

Located at 2064 North Decatur Road, Rocco’s New York Pizza received a 60/U on its inspection Tuesday.

Among new violations, the inspector noted “multiple flying insects” in the kitchen that landed on food and meal preparation surfaces. The inspector also found the restaurant’s copy of the last inspection “hidden behind pizza boxes” instead of posted for the public to view.

Out of the 13 violations listed in the report, nine were repeat violations that had been cited on the restaurant's last inspection in March. The restaurant received a 65/U on that inspection and a 76/C on the subsequent follow-up.

Violations repeated this week included a buildup of food debris underneath and behind equipment in the kitchen as well as at the bottom of coolers. Food and utensils were stored in cardboard boxes “soiled with food debris and grease stains.”

Multiple ready-to-eat food items were not marked with the date they were cooked. “Employee stated that the items could have possibly been made two days ago or later,” the inspector noted in the report. Many of the foods, including cooked pasta, chicken and meatballs, were discarded for safety.

Rocco's New York Pizza was reopened Wednesday after a follow-up inspection. The restaurant received an 83/B.

Management of Rocco’s New York Pizza was not immediately available for comment Thursday.
