At her request Decatur High School Principal Arlethea Williams has been granted a transfer to the Talley Street Upper Elementary School, where she’ll serve as assistant principal. The announcement was made recently in a letter to parents sent by Dr. Maggie Fehrman, City Schools of Decatur’s executive director of schools.
Williams will be one of two assistants working with Principal Billy Heaton at the new 3-5 facility scheduled to open August 1. There was no reason nor additional comment offered regarding Williams’ decision to leave after four years as DHS principal.
Before that she was Decatur High’s assistant principal for seven years, Dean of Students for two years and a Decatur High Science teacher for 10 years.
Wes Hatfield, DHS graduate and assistant principal at the school since 2006, has been named interim principal.
CSD spokesperson Courtney Burnett said there is no timeline yet, but the search for a permanent principal should begin in late fall. She added that the permanent leader “may not start until the [2020-21 school year] because of contractual obligations.”
