A total of 275 South Decatur residents signed a petition asking for a lower speed limit, more crosswalks and traffic calming on South Candler Street from Pharr Road to College Avenue. The document was signed by Mayor Jim Baskett and will be sent to the state’s Department of Transportation.

Historically GDOT has been reluctant to make significant changes on any of the city’s three state roads, particularly when it comes to slowing traffic.

South Candler’s current speed limit is 35 mph, but a driver can’t be ticketed until reaching a minimum 46 mph. During certain periods South Candler is full of bikers and pedestrians and it’s crossed by children going to three city schools.

The neighborhood group wants the limit lowered to 25 “residential, “where drivers can be ticketed at one mph hour over the limit.

“It’s a scary street,” said Tonio Andrade, who represents the petitioners. “You have cars hopping curves, smashing into fences, killing pets and nearly hitting children.”
