Crews in Cobb County are planning on hitting the road just as Monday starts to do battle with icy streets.

The county said just before the weekend that department of transportation workers will start about 1 a.m. Monday combating the freezing rain expected to make driving conditions dangerous possibly through lunchtime.

They hope salt will be enough.

“Spreading the salt would protect the bridges even if the precipitation starts as rain,” said Bill Shelton, Cobb’s road maintenance director. “It would prevent the overpasses from freezing over when temperatures drop below 32 degrees.”

Making it worse is how cold the ground is after such chilly temperatures the last several days, meaning frozen roads are more likely, the county said.

Cobb said it believes folks could be in for 12 hours of freezing rain on Monday, the day of the national football championship.
