Cobb County Manager David Hankerson will serve one more year until Jan. 31, 2018.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday to reappoint Hankerson.

Commissioner Bob Ott was opposed but did not voice his reason.

Besides continuing to oversee the 5,000-member county staff, Hankerson will be preparing for his successor who will be chosen by Commission Chairman Mike Boyce with board approval.

“You’ve been here 23 years; I’ve been here 23 days. I want to thank you for working with me and for your patience and understanding,” Boyce told Hankerson.

“I look forward to making this year your best year ever,” Boyce added.

Hankerson said to Boyce, “It’s been a lot of fun to work with you on your visions and the visions of the other commissioners.”

County manager since 1993, Hankerson first joined Cobb Government as manager of the Development Control Department. Previously, he served as a district conservationist for the USDA Soil Conservation Service.

A native of Waynesboro, Hankerson holds a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy from Fort Valley State College and a Juris Doctorate from Woodrow Wilson College of Law. Hankerson is active in numerous associations and civic groups, including the American Public Works Association, Soil Conservation Society of America and 100 Black Men of Cobb County.
