A Clayton County Sheriff's Office bookkeeper is out on bond after being arrested Monday for allegedly stealing $6,000 in bond money.

Tracy Lynn Meredith faces eight felony counts of theft by conversion, Sheriff Kem Kimbrough said Tuesday. The 40-year-old Stockbridge woman posted a $32,000 bond Tuesday morning. Meredith allegedly confessed on Monday to taking the money, Kimbrough said. The confession capped a month-long investigation after sheriff's officials noticed "irregularities with the accounting."

"We had unaccountable funds which launched an investigation," Kimbrough said. The investigation helped sheriff's officials zero in on a possible suspect.

"We went and talked to her and she confessed during the interview. She said it was the pressures of everyday living. She didn't give any particulars about why she took it," Kimbrough said. Meredith was arrested and booked into the same jail where she has worked for the past two years. She is expected to lose her job.

Meredith is the second employee from the sheriff's department who has gone to jail for a job-related offense in the last two months. Former sheriff's spokeswoman Deputy Alicia Nicole Parkes was indicted in March for obstruction of an officer and eavesdropping. Parkes is alleged to have illegally recorded a colleague while in a restroom.
