Clayton County Commissioner Sonna Gregory (District 1) was recently awarded the Pota E. Costen Trailblazer Award by the East Point/College Park Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, acording to a press release. The award recognizes a member of the chapter that has demonstrated exemplary achievement in the area of Social Action.

Pota Costen, who was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta retired from the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Business Division in 2008 after a 29 year career in federal law enforcement. It was in November of 2014 that Costen changed local political landscape as the first African-American woman to be elected to a county public office as a County Commissioner in Fayette County, GA. Unfortunately, shortly after winning her commission seat the trailblazer died after a five-month battle with breast cancer.

As a County Commissioner, Gregory has served the county for over a decade. Over the years Commissioner Gregory has incorporated Delta Sigma Theta’s Five Point Program Thrust of educational development, economic development, political awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and international awareness and involvement into her community service platform as an elected public servant.
