The city of Stockbridge brought down the Community Arts Center building located at 146 Burke Street on Monday.

The structure was built in the 1990s and served for a number of years as a training and operations center for First State Bank before being purchased by the city of Stockbridge in 2012. At that time the city sought proposals for turning it into a proscenium theater and forged an agreement with the Academy Theatre group to hold performances at the site. A portion of the building served that purpose until 2016.

In July the City conducted a property condition assessment leading to the decision to demolish, rather than rehabilitate, the existing structure. The demolition work was awarded to Diversified Environmental Management Inc. who gutted the inside of the building in preparation for the final stage of demolition, which began Monday.

The demolition and site clearance work is anticipated to be complete by mid-June. Future plans call for a needs assessment to be completed to determine the type of community facility it will become. The final details and scope of the project will be determined by the Council with input from the community.
