Rush-hour travelers navigating through Sandy Springs should brace for upcoming road closures and delays due to ongoing construction to the future Performing Arts Center at City Springs.

Two eastbound lanes along Johnson Ferry Road, between Sandy Springs Circle and Roswell Road, will close for two weeks beginning Sept. 16. The remaining open lanes will have two-way traffic.

A  550-ton crane will lift six, 100-foot trusses to aid with roof support on the Performing Arts Center at City Springs. City officials said the crane will arrive to the job site in sections because of its size – 65-feet by 30-feet. The crane’s boom will expand 197 feet from the ground.

The ongoing construction stems from a larger plan to cultivate parts of  Sandy Springs' high-traffic and booming residential areas into one downtown epicenter known as City Springs. The Sandy Springs City Council adopted a mixed-use expansion plan in 2012 that would sprout new dining, office and park spaces, luxury apartments and condominiums, retail and entertainment venues by 2017.

The overall City Springs area will contain 15 acres and stretch from Mount Vernon Highway and Johnsons Ferry Road to Roswell Road . Construction continues this week on several office towers, parking decks, studio theatres and roadways.
