The Cherokee County Board of Education Thursday night will get a first look at candidates to replace retiring School Superintendent Frank Petruzielo. District spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby said they’ll meet in executive session to look at the applicants and possibly select finalists for interviews.

The school board’s attorney, Tom Roach, said he couldn’t release the number of applicants or a general description of those who threw their hats into the ring because the board hadn’t had a chance to peruse the list. He did say that as required by law, the board will release the names of up to three finalists at least 14 days before the board makes a final decision.

Petruzielo announced in early September that he’ll retire effective Feb. 1 after 17 years at the helm of the district, which manages 44 schools and centers and has an enrollment in excess of 40,000 students.
