The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved reimbursing Georgia Power up to $562,096 to relocate overhead utility poles to make way for intersection improvements at Ga. 140 and East Cherokee Drive.

Plans call for the addition of dedicated right-turn lanes to all approaches to the intersection, and the addition of left-turn-lane storage and traffic signal modifications to allow flashing yellow lights.

The $562,096 cost represents “the worst-case scenario. It’s likely to be less than that,” County Manager Jerry Cooper told commissioners.

The county is receiving $1 million in federal funds through the Georgia Department of Transportation to help pay for the project, according to a staff report to commissioners.
