Cherokee County has approved a 10-year agreement with the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce to promote tourism, conventions and trade shows in exchange for a share of hotel/motel taxes.
Under the agreement, the Canton-based Chamber will earn an amount equal to 0.5 cents per dollar of sales or $50,000 a year, whichever is greater, of the county’s 6 percent hotel/motel tax.
Legislation authorizing the tax sets expenditure requirements of the county, and the agreement with the Chamber is intended to fulfill those obligations, according to the agreement recently approved by the Cherokee Board of Commissioners.
“This agreement outlines requirements of the Chamber to promote tourism,” County Manager Jerry Cooper told commissioners. These include advertising, public relations and promotions; marketing and promoting the county as a year-round destination; pursuing group and individual travelers, and providing “credible tracking and accountability data.”
