No ice cream for you, DeKalb County.

Instead of tweaking the county code as expected Tuesday, the County Commission put off a vote that would allow ice cream vendors to peddle their wares legally.

The next time it could decide the issue is July 24 -- a full month into a steamy, stifling summer.

"I just want to make it very clear, this board is all in favor of ice cream," Commissioner Kathie Gannon said. "We just need to deal with some language changes."

What they worry about are other trucks that might lumber alongside the ice cream wagons to entice customers craving ... turkey on rye.

That could happen, they warn, because the proposed change of the county's ban on food sales from vehicles wasn't limited enough. It would let vendors with state Agriculture Department permits offer treats, but didn't single out ice cream novelties. Any prepackaged food would be allowed.

Commissioner Larry Johnson said the delay also will allow the board to review whether all trucks must be outfitted with GPS systems in case of complaints or violations. "But we still want ice cream."
