The city of Chamblee Police Department is taking applications for its Junior Police Academy.
The free program takes place June 10-14 and provides young adults with basic information about law enforcement and police activities. The ultimate objective is to establish a positive relationship between Chamblee’s youth and law enforcement representatives.
Cadets will experience a wide variety of police work, from routine traffic stops to crime scene processing. CPD Officers from traffic enforcement, dispatch and crime scene investigation as well as the Doraville K-9 unit will give the cadets a hands-on experience throughout the week. They also will tour the Chamblee Police Department, 911 communications center and the DeKalb County Jail.
“Every day will be something different for the cadets to experience, and we are looking forward to seeing the program expand throughout the years to come,” says Captain Ernesto Ford, Investigative Commander of the Chamblee Police Department.
The program consists of students ages 13-15 years old and gives youth exposure into the life of a police officer.
Cadets also will receive experience in fingerprinting, traffic safety, crime prevention, self-defense and more. “This program will give local youth exposure into what it is like to be an officer, work in public safety or in the judicial system. It’s a great experience for them to work hand in hand with our police officers. We hope this program will continue to grow,” says Chamblee Police Chief Kerry Thomas. The program will conclude with a graduation ceremony for parents and friends.
Applications are due May 6 and must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, principal or clergy member.
