A well-known restaurant is closed after a car crashed into the front of the building.

Home Grown Restaurant was struck by a car around 2:35 a.m.

After four decades of restaurants at the corner of Memorial Drive and Gibson Street, it's the first time any type of accident like this has ever happened.

"People ask all the time, 'has anybody every driven into the building?' No. They hit the sign, but never into the building.  Now I can say they have,” said owner Kevin Clark.

Clark told Channel 2's Berndt Petersen his kitchen employee was inside the restaurant prepping for the next day when the crash happened.

"There's two tables right there. It's kind of in a corner between two tables. Had there been people there, somebody would have been hurt badly,” said employee Greg Kirby.

The restaurant's security cameras caught it all on tape.

"Like someone ran them off the road. But it wasn't as you see in the video, it was from the parking lot, back into the parking lot. So, it really didn't make much sense,” Clark said.

Police charged a female driver with leaving the scene of an accident and other charges are pending. In the meantime, the diner's owner is taking it all in stride.

"You know, things happen. We have great customers. They'll be back. I mean, it won't hurt business.  People who come by are mad because they can't eat.  So, that's why we're here.  Let them know it was an accident.  Not renovations," Clark said.

Clark said they are open for regular business Monday.
