Decatur’s Callaway Building, built in late 1970s, will probably get demolished by the end of this year, with the few remaining DeKalb County employees vacating by early November. The building is full of asbestos that will need removing prior to demolition, according to Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne, but removal will be contained and won’t pose any danger to Decatur High next door, she added.

The city and Cousins Properties are collaborating on a mixed-use development for the site, likely to include apartments and a grocery. Menne estimates construction will start late, 2016.

The building is named for longtime DeKalb County Commissioner Tom Callaway, who also owned the Oldsmobile dealership at Commerce Drive and Ponce De Leon Avenue, where CVS sits today.
