A cabdriver was beaten and his taxi stolen during a carjacking in northwest Atlanta on Saturday.

The victim, whose name has not been released, suffered a head injury after being attacked by people he picked up at the Omni Hotel on Marietta Street, said Atlanta Police Sgt. Richard Straut. The carjackers dumped the driver out of the cab near the intersection of North Avenue and Northside Drive. The driver was able to walk to a nearby gas station, where he called for help. Police found the cab abandoned a few blocks away at North Avenue and State Street, said police spokesman John Chafee.

Straut told Channel 2 Action News that the victim, who was "coherent and walking around," was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Straut said investigators "have some ideas" of who the perpetrators are.

"We need to find out who they are and quick," Straut said. "And we're going to put them in jail."
