Following three public hearings, the Brookhaven city council on Monday set a millage rate of 2.740, lower than the previous rate of 2.795.
Brookhaven and Dunwoody have the lowest incorporated millage rate in DeKalb County, according to city officials. The council said that the new rate continues to be sensitive to the fact that the city is still in startup mode and needs to grow its reserves.
District 2 Councilmember John Park said that while he believes in tax stability and would have preferred it stay the same, he was O.K. with the number as it still allows $500,000 to be contributed to city reserves.
District 4 Councilmember Joe Gebbia, who introduced the motion to adopt the new tax rate, said the economy is coming back strong and the city will have a higher tax revenue base than expected.
“I’m very pleased with the number,” said District 1 Councilmember Linley Jones. “We have reduced the millage rate every year and the city can continue to provide services at its current level or above.”
