Go on brewery, distillery tour of Cobb with this neat interactive map

Cobb County just made it easier to get buzzed while exploring new spots around the county.

Cobb’s team of online mapmakers created an interactive tool that shows multiple routes of how you and your drinking pals could go on a tour of the breweries and distilleries throughout the county.

The map includes useful information like hours of operation, the facility’s website and a look at some of the booze.

"As Georgia's laws are changing and popularity of local breweries is growing ... a map was desired to highlight those facilities in Cobb County," said Jennifer Lana, who runs the county's Geographic Information System (GIS) program.

This buzz-inducing tool was created by two Kennesaw State University students interning with the county GIS team, she said.

Also, reminder: This is a driving tour, so plan accordingly and drink responsibly.

As part of this tough assignment, the brave interns checked the routes by driving to each brewery and distillery ... for science.

The routes stretch from the Terrapin Taproom inside SunTrust Park and  The Battery to Burnt Hickory Brewery in Kennesaw.

The maps were built to work on smartphones, tablets and desktops.

Lana said that students each semester also work on things not related to alcohol like projects on transportation, water management and public safety.

She said her team is in charge of updating more than 400 datasets.

Interns have come from not only KSU but Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, University of West Georgia, University of Georgia, Marshall University in West Virginia and Kennesaw Mountain High School's STEM-focused magnet program.

Lana said she plans on having interns create similar interactive maps and websites on topics like museums, parks and Keep Cobb Beautiful efforts.

So if you see one of those interns, buy ‘em a drink — as long as they’re old enough.
