In ceremonies held Dec. 13 at the University of North Georgia, graduating cadets were awarded commissions as second lieutenants: Isabella Arcila of Marietta, Jesse Briggs of Tallapoosa, Charles Brown of Hiram, Jonathan Carrasco Lebron and Isha Feika of Dallas, Liberty Dermire of Dahlonega, Holden Gossett of Adairsville, Paul Hew of Acworth, Thomas Kirby of Carrollton, Joshua Nixon and Joshua Searcy of Newnan.

Lamin Ceesay of Atlanta, Chiquita Hall of Buford and Hector Hernandez of Norcross graduated from Graceland University on Dec. 14.

Reginald Parker of Austell, Jermaine Lattimore of Stockbridge and Zavannah Brown of Villa Rica graduated from Hinds Community College on Dec. 18.

Four Cherokee County School District schools have been recognized by Gov. Brian Kemp for academic success and progress:

Avery Elementary School earned its second consecutive top Gold Award, Holly Springs Elementary School STEM Academy won Silver, and Sequoyah High School won Bronze in the "Greatest Gains" ratings. These awards honor only 130 schools statewide that earned a three-year average CCRPI (College and Career Ready Performance Index) Progress Score ranking in at least the 93rd percentile.

Cayleigh Jackson, a student at Emory, along with Powder Springs local Emma Zgonc were awarded scholarships for the yearlong Leadership Scholars Program with The Fund for American Studies.

After serving seven years as a Veteran Appeals Officer, including two as Assistant Director, Shelly-Ann Simpson was recently promoted to serve as the Director of the Georgia Department of Veterans Service Appeals Division.
