No one was injured in a fire at the Gwinnett County Jail on Sunday morning.
Firefighters quickly handled the smoke and flames from a boiler in a mechanical room on the right rear side of the building on Ga. 316 in Lawrenceville, Lt. Eric Eberly of the Gwinnett Fire Department said.
Only the boiler was damaged and jail operations have not been impacted, Eberly said. The facilities command staff said the boilers are used to heat the building and prepare food. If needed, a contingency plan is in place to feed the inmates lunch and dinner.
Crews have been on the scene since about 6:45 a.m. and are standing by while the boiler cools down, Eberly said.
The fire was caused by a mechanical malfunction and is listed as accidental, he said.
