A group of young scientists from Rockdale Magnet School for Sci Tech in Conyers participated in the White House Science Fair hosted by President Obama. These students were the 2013 winners of a Discovery Education-sponsored, nationwide competition called We Can Change the World. Team "The Nanocrystals" and its mentor, Scott Bolen, won first prize in the high school division for finding a cost-effective and efficient replacement for current commercial quantum dot solar cells.

The Alpharetta High School orchestra and chorus accepted an invitation to play at the celebration of the 70th anniversary of D-Day, which will be attended by several world leaders including President Obama and Queen Elizabeth. The Alpharetta group left for France on June 2, allowing them to play in the anniversary opening celebration on the evening of June 5, in the Vierville sur mer church near Omaha Beach.

Rachel Darwin, a rising senior at Alcovy High School attending Newton College & Career Academy in Covington, will participate in the 2014 U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar Program, which teaches prospective applicants about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics and professional training are key elements in developing the nation's leaders.

Sara Lepkofker, a biology teacher at Northview High School, and her team of three student innovators, Yashi Sanghvi, Amy Hu and Amanda Zhang, joined nearly 5,000 other teams from across the United States and Canada to develop and innovative technology that could help build a better future. The Northview team developed the Kidney Microfilter Regulation Device, an artificial silicone kidney that will be surgically implanted into a patient's body. The device earned the girls a national second place award for grades 7-9 in the NSTA/Toshiba ExploraVision competition.

David Chavez and Jorge Gonzalez from Maxwell High School in Lawrenceville won the Georgia state finals of the AAA/Ford Auto Skills competition earlier this spring and will now be competing in the national finals June 8-10, at Ford Headquarters in Dearborn, Mich.

Delta Community Credit Union presented Sara Harp Minter Elementary School a $2,000 check on May 22 at Delta Community's Fayetteville branch. The grant will go toward purchasing the materials needed to implement the school's new Leader in Me program, which empowers every child in the school through a culture that teaches confidence and self-leadership.
