DeKalb County's Cary Reynolds Elementary School won a $10,000 school improvement grant as part of Georgia United Credit Union's School Crasher Makeover Grant program. Cary Reynolds, one of five runners-up, was one of 752 schools across the state to submit nominations for school projects. The school plans to use the grant for playground improvements.

Alpharetta student Matthew Gabriel and Adrian Burns of Gainesville received academic scholarships for the current school year from the Former Agents of the FBI Foundation. Gabriel, the son of former FBI Agent Chuck Gabriel, will attend Clemson University. Burns, son of former agent Brian Garrett, will attend the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega. The scholarships were awarded based on the students' financial need, academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.

Gwinnett County Public School's Lanier High graduate Hi Soobin earned a $1,500 Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarship. The Simon Youth Scholarships program benefits recent high school graduates nationwide, many of whom will be first-generation college students.

The Georgia Association of Educational Leaders awarded Fayette County Schools administrator Lisa Fine with the Jim Puckett Outstanding Educator of the Year Award for High School Principals. Fine is principal of McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, and has led the school for the past five years. She is the previous recipient of awards for Fayette County teacher of the year, and Georgia assistant principal of the year.

Meadowcreek High School business education and computer science teacher Pintu Thaker was named the Georgia Business Education Association Teacher of the Year at the Georgia Association for Career and Technical Education Conference. The award recognizes a dedicated business or computer science teacher who demonstrates a strong ability to foster excellence in education through the improvement of student learning and the learning environment.

Gwinnett County Public School students Emanuella Dastine and Samantha Edwards won first and second place, respectively, at the Clean Air Schools OnAir Spring Blogger Challenge. The Clean Air Campaign asked Georgia teens to write a blog post answering the question: What would make your school greener? Dastine urged students to stop littering, walk to school and recycle. Edwards also recommended starting community and personal gardens. Both are students at South Gwinnett High School.

North Atlanta High School tennis players' good deeds were rewarded recently with a private donation to the school's tennis team. The players — Anthony Franklin, DianaSweeney, Jackson Couch, Taylor Brown and John Lieng — volunteered their time at a youth summer tennis camp this summer hosted by Kidz Tennis. The company in turn donated 10 cases of tennis balls to the school team.
