Design guidelines for the Austell Road Corridor were approved Nov. 13 by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

In this 31-page report, sections address standards for architecture, streetscapes and landscaping.

In August 2016, Cobb commissioners approved a contract with The Collaborative Firm for $127,500 to develop design guidelines for various areas of south and southeast Cobb County.

The guidelines are intended to assist county staff, architects, engineers, planners, developers and community members to make more informed design decisions for private developments or public facility investments in the areas of Mableton Parkway, Veterans Memorial Highway, Downtown Vinings and Austell Road.

The scope of the study spanned the entire 8.4-mile corridor from Veterans Memorial Highway to South Cobb Drive.

For the Austell Road Corridor, the emphasis is on the area surrounding WellStar Cobb Hospital.

Stakeholder meetings were held on Aug. 24, Sept. 25 and Oct. 19, 2017 with community meetings on Sept. 5, Sept. 28 and Oct. 26, 2017.

There are eight areas within Cobb that have adopted design guidelines with seven as roadway corridors and one focused on a central focal point.

Provisions for each design guideline area are contained within Cobb’s Development Standards document, enforced by way of the development plan review process and included as stipulations during rezoning proceedings.
