Though the proposed McGinnis Ferry Road widening is still $11 million short of full funding, the Alpharetta City Council has approved an intergovernmental agreement with Johns Creek and Forsyth County to move the project forward.

The agreement “allows all governments to get started on acquiring needed right-of-way, permanent and temporary construction easements and, in Alpharetta’s case, to construct its share of the road from the eastern end of the bridge over Big Creek west to the Ronald Reagan (Boulevard) intersection, while capping our total funding commitment at $5.9 million,” City Administrator Bob Regus said in a memo to the mayor and council.

Funding commitments so far are $18 million from Forsyth; $10 million from the Georgia Department of Transportation; and $5.9 million from each of Alpharetta and Johns Creek, Regus said. That’s a total of about $40 million vs. an estimated project cost of $51 million.

The agreement is a “good faith effort,” with the possibility of additional funding from the state, Regus said.
