The Acworth Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) are involved in a nationwide initiative to prevent increased prescription pill abuse and theft.
Potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs will be collected for destruction from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 26 at Walmart, 3826 Cobb Parkway, Acworth.
The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.
Most people are not aware that medicines remaining in the home are “highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse,” according to a statement from the Acworth Police Department.
In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards, the statement added.
Year-round, these expired or unused prescription drugs may be disposed in a permanent collection box at the police department, 4440 Acworth Industrial Drive, Acworth - again no questions asked.
No needles/sharps, syringes, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, empty containers, inhalers and/or medical equipment will be accepted.
