Former DeKalb schools Superintendent Michael Thurmond won the Democratic primary Tuesday for the county's CEO position, defeating former DeKalb Commissioner Connie Stokes and car towing business owner Joe Bembry.
Thurmond, who campaigned on the slogan "Let's fix it together," said he had the experience to lead DeKalb's government past a time of turmoil. Interim DeKalb CEO Lee May isn't running for election.
Thurmond was the school system's superintendent at a time when its leadership was in doubt. He previously served as Georgia's Labor Commissioner and led the state's Division of Family and Children's Services. He was also a member of the state House of Representatives.
Stokes was the County Commission's Budget Committee chairwoman, and she also served in the state Senate.
Bembry has run for various offices over the years.
