A last-ditch effort failed to save a bill that would allow South Fulton residents to create a new city.
The Senate voted 22-7 in favor of the bill Thursday afternoon, but it needed at least 29 votes to pass. The move ends the South Fulton incorporation effort for this year.
The bill would have allowed residents to vote in November on whether to form the new city. Supporters said the city would give residents more control over zoning and public services. Other residents said they’d rather join an existing city or remain unincorporated.
Supporters of the proposed city said they will bring the proposal back to the General Assembly next year.
