Last week, the Johns Creek council voted "full and complete opposition" to MARTA rail expansion in north Fulton County.
The council unanimously passed the resolution with little advance notice and even less public comment.
This resolution appears to be a direct response the mayors of Sandy Springs and Roswell pushing for countywide discussion of MARTA's proposed expansion.
Johns Creek council member Bob Gray, the resolution's sponsor, opposed public comment, calling it "an interesting exercise."
So the AJC hosted an exercise of their own. In an informal Twitter poll, an overwhelming majority favored MARTA rail expanding into north Fulton County. Here is the poll:
The original article about the John Creek council's decision has also garnered hundreds of comments, with heavy support for both sides of the issue.
A self-declared Johns Creek native said he tried to sell his house, but faced obstacles when prospective buyers complained about traffic.
Every single member of the Johns Creek City Council ran by promising to improve the traffic and then they pass this ridiculous resolution with no opportunity for public comment at all.
EJMoosa said MARTA's plans are a long-term project instead of a immediate panacea:
Let's be honest. MARTA has said rail would get to Windward Parkway in 2030. That is 15 years away. How does that sound as a strategic solution?
Commenter Bursaw says some people should mind their own business:
Why do people who don't live or work in Johns Creek care so much if they don't want Marta? It seems like another excuse for our over sensitive society to be offended.
Will10 wrote that the metro Atlanta region really needs MARTA to help with traffic congestion:
After living in Boston for a short period, you can realize how nice it is not to have to rely on a car. Yes its a pretty big lifestyle adjustment at first, but its nice.
Commenter almmanduane75 says there's a better solution to Atlanta's traffic than MARTA: getting rid of transplants altogether.
How about... any one not originally from Georgia going back to where ever the hell they came from and leaving us alone. And take your cars with you.
Can you imagine how much lighter traffic would be? Wouldn't need Marta.
Problem solved.
Carlos Castillo gave MARTA some sassy advice:
There's an easy way for MARTA to handle this if it ever goes through John's Creek. Just don't put a stop there; then post a plaque that credits the council members who voted on this resolution.
