The announcement that telecommunications provider Level 3 Communications is moving more than 300 employees to Peachtree Corners is like going “back to the future,” Mayor Mike Mason said.

The firm said it is relocating employees from Atlanta to Technology Park, which was once a hub of high-tech workers, but has struggled in recent years to keep its buildings full. Among other losses for the area, FiServ left Peachtree Corners for Alpharetta.

So Level 3’s move, Mason said, is “a big deal” and a boost for his plan to revitalize Technology Park, which includes creation of a business incubator.

“Our tech roots are deep out there,” Mason said. “Tech Park is not that anymore… It’s kind of a welcome back home.”

Jorge Magana, Level 3’s vice president of global operations, said he decided to move employees and buy the building because the area is a “cornerstone of growth” for the company. The regional sales head will be in Peachtree Corners, as will the global network operations center. The building, he said, has plenty of room to expand.

In Atlanta, Level 3 was leasing and was running out of space. In Peachtree Corners, they’ll own. Some employees will stay downtown, but for the most part, the workforce will be in Gwinnett County.

Earlier this year, NCR, another technology company, announced it was moving to Atlanta from Gwinnett.

“We were looking throughout the whole region for the right home,” Magana said. “It made sense for us.”

Mason said the move underscores the good quality of life in the area.

“There are a whole lot of companies coming to Peachtree Corners,” he said.
