As The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently reported, Gwinnett County commissioners have endorsed a Nov. 8 referendum on a 1 percent sales tax for construction projects. That means voters will decide whether to renew the special local option sales tax (SPLOST) that is expected to generate $950 million over six years for roads, parks, libraries and other projects.

Now Gwinnett is looking for public input on how its share it should spend its share of the money for transportation projects.

Residents interested in participating in the Citizens Project Selection Committee are invited to attend its organizational meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive, Lawrenceville. The committee will review and prioritize transportation project categories and funding levels and help keep the public informed about the SPLOST.

At the meeting, the county will select members and alternates to represent 11 groups. Four members will represent homeowners (one from each commission district). Others will represent business leaders, environmental groups, schools, civic organizations, the freight and manufacturing industry, seniors and young professionals.

To be considered, participants must be Gwinnett residents and provide photo documentation. The county is sending hundreds of letters this week to spread the word.

On Tuesday, commissioners formally called for the Nov. 8 referendum. You can find more information about the upcoming meeting and about the county's SPLOST program at www.gwinnettSPLOST.com or call the county transportation department at 770-822-7400.
