Gwinnett County school board members are meeting Thursday for their monthly work session and meeting.
Here are five issues on the agenda or may be discussed:
- Transgender facilities: A tea party group has asked members to come to the meeting to press school board members about last week's federal government directive that schools allow transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms that fit their gender identity. Gwinnett has criticized the guidelines as federal "overreach."
- The budget: The school board is scheduled to vote its final approval of the proposed budget for the 2016-17 school year. The proposed budget is near $2 billion, a 4.6 percent increase from the current budget, and includes salary increases for teachers.
- Property taxes: Board members will vote on the school district's millage rate, also known as the property tax rate. School district administrators have proposed keeping it at its current rate.
- Coleman Middle School: Administrators will give an update at its 3 p.m. work session on the school, which is scheduled to open in August. The school is named after state Rep. Brooks Coleman, R-Duluth, a former Gwinnett educator who is chairman of Georgia House of Representatives education committee.
- CCRPI performance: Administrators will discuss the ratings released earlier this month by the state of Gwinnett's schools. The ratings were based primarily on academic performance on state assessments.
