Some Georgia legislators are backing a measure to permit religious writings on student athletes’ uniforms. They were stirred by the disqualification of a high school runner because he wore a head band with a Bible verse, and they say their aim is to prevent discrimination against religious expression.

But the Georgia High School Association opposes House Bill 870, saying it would cause problems for the group that are not related to religion.
