Some Graves Elementary School students will get extra homework help, thanks to a program funded by SCANA Energy.

SCANA Energy is spending $15,000 this school year on the homework center at the Gwinnett County school. The company held a celebration with students and school officials at the school Monday afternoon.

Two Graves teachers will stay after school on Mondays and Wednesday to work with about 45 third- and fifth-graders. Students will stay after school based on their academic needs.

SCANA Energy chose Graves Elementary because of the student needs in math and English, and because it is a Title I school in Gwinnett, said Simone McKinney, a company spokeswoman. Title I is a designation given to schools with high percentages of low-income students. SCANA Energy also funds another homework center at Hopkins Elementary in Lilburn.

Graves, near I-85 and Jimmy Carter Boulevard, opened this school year to ease overcrowding of other elementary schools in the Norcross area.
