A former Fulton County superintendent will return to lead the school district on an interim basis after the coming resignation of Jeff Rose.
The Fulton school board Tuesday appointed Cindy Loe, who served as superintendent from 2008 to 2011, as the district's interim superintendent.
The decision comes after Rose, who became superintendent in 2016, announced last month that he would resign Dec. 31, before his contract expires on Oct. 31, 2019.

Rose cited unspecified personal reasons for his departure. The school board had delayed his annual review for several months until October to give more time to collect information before considering a renewal of his contract. That delay alarmed some parents who supported Rose and wanted to see him continue as superintendent.
Loe’s start date, salary and other details would be “worked out in the coming weeks,” said district spokeswoman Cierra Chuly Boyd, in an email.
School board vice president Linda McCain said during Tuesday’s meeting that the board had spoken with Loe about the interim appointment.
“Dr. Loe has a great depth of experience as an educational leader and a strong commitment to our community,” McCain said.
Loe has continued to live in Fulton County since her retirement, McCain said.
Loe previously worked in Gwinnett County as an associate superintendent and has worked as a principal and teacher.
Her education background includes a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Georgia State University, a master's degree in middle-grade and gifted education from Armstrong State College in Savannah, and a doctorate degree in educational leadership from Georgia State.
She was the first woman to serve as Fulton superintendent.
In brief public remarks after the board vote, Rose congratulated Loe on the appointment and described her as a “humble and focused leader.”
The terms of Rose’s departure call for him to serve as a consultant for six months after his resignation to help with the leadership transition. Rose told board members he thinks he and Loe will “have a very collaborative relationship.”
