Former Cobb County school superintendent Michael Hinojosa, who resigned last year to take a job as an educational consultant in Texas, has been named the lone finalist for superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District.

Hinojosa, who was named interim superintendent of the Dallas school system this summer, was appointed as finalist for the position last week by the Dallas school district's board of trustees.

The trustees will now wait 21 days as required by law before making the appointment final. Hinojosa will continue serving as interim superintendent of Dallas ISD during that time, the school system said in a released statement.

Hinojosa, who led the Cobb school system starting July 2011, announced in February 2014 he would be stepping down to move back to Dallas, where he also planned to care for aging parents.

Hinojosa was superintendent of the Dallas school district for six years before leaving in 2011 to take the superintendent job in Cobb.

“Our board is pleased to have Dr. Hinojosa back in a permanent capacity. In just a brief time since his return, he has proven to be the steady and experienced hand needed to guide Dallas ISD,” said board president Eric Cowan.

Dallas school board members asked Hinojosa to return to act as interim superintendent to replace outgoing superintendent Mike Miles.

Cobb school board members voted this spring to replace Hinojosa with Chris Ragsdale, who had been appointed interim superintendent after Hinojosa’s departure. Ragsdale has a background in information technology and was Cobb’s deputy superintendent for operations before becoming superintendent.
